ProCurve Mobility Manager 2.0: Strengthening wired/wireless unification

ProCurve Mobility Manager 2.0ProCurve Mobility Manager (PMM) 2.0 is a significantly upgraded software module for ProCurve Manager Plus (PCM+) network management software. PMM 2.0 strengthens the unification of wired and wireless networks while simplifying network operation – allowing you to design, implement, manage and monitor the health of your wireless LANs (WLANs).

WLAN visualization tools
PMM 2.0 enables network administrators to visualize their wireless network coverage, so they can optimize the effectiveness of their network.

With PMM 2.0, network designers can visualize the placement and configuration of ProCurve access points (APs) and radio ports, as well as their effect on the desired coverage area. The result is easier and faster WLAN deployment.

Monitoring network health is easy with PMM 2.0’s integrated, single-screen dashboard.  This common, unified network management console provides device or network-wide wireless network utilization and client activity – which streamlines wireless and wired network management and simplifies reporting capabilities.

By displaying wireless network coverage and access of wireless clients, PMM 2.0 can monitor both managed and unmanaged wireless devices, including possible rogue APs operating within the wireless network.  In this way, this upgraded plug-in helps mitigate potential gaps in security policy.

Key features and benefits of PMM 2.0
In addition to the capabilities offered by PCM+, ProCurve Mobility Manager 2.0 enables the following WLAN management functionality:

WLAN planning and deployment

Site plan:

  1. Displays a graphical representation of the desired coverage area.
  2. Can import floor plans and identify physical dimensions and obstacles, such as external and internal walls, and their RF properties.

RF coverage prediction (heat map):

  1. Enables network designers to visualize the effect on desired coverage area of the placement and configuration of ProCurve APs and radio ports.
  2. Uses simple drag-and-drop graphical capabilities.

Auto-placement wizard:

  1. Automatically determines the number of devices, physical location and device configuration parameters (e.g., transmit power, channel selection).
  2. Lets users simply select the ProCurve device type, radio configuration and desired data rate.

Wireless device planner report:

  1. Provides a detailed, accurate bill of materials (BOM) report, including a list of devices, their required x and y coordinates, and physical orientation within the floor plan.
  2. Reduces the time and cost of WLAN installation.

WLAN monitoring and reporting

Single-screen WLAN dashboard:

  1. Provides charting of wireless network statistics for a single device or a user-defined group of ProCurve APs and radio ports.
  2. Collects and displays up to an hour of historical network statistics.

Site view:

  1. Displays wireless network coverage; physical location and activity of wireless clients; and both managed and unmanaged (possible rogue APs) wireless devices operating within the wireless network.
  2. Uses site plans stored or imported into PMM 2.0.
  3. Simplifies monitoring and troubleshooting.

Reporting tools:

  1. Includes wireless diagnostic and network activity reporting capabilities to troubleshoot or analyze client activity and infrastructure performance.
  2. Enables the quick building of customized reports, at a device or group level.

Network security

Rogue device detection:  Alerts administrators to untrusted devices discovered via radio-frequency scans.

Centralized application of security policies:  Helps ensure consistent application of an organization’s security policies via template-based group configuration of wireless device security settings.

Automated configuration checking:  Lets administrators choose to be alerted to any device configuration changes, helping mitigate potential gaps in security policy.

Configuration management

Device configuration:  Allows administrators to select a ProCurve wireless device from a list of auto-discovered devices, or click a wireless device icon on the site view map, to view or configure device, radio and security parameters.

Group-based configuration and software management:  Allows administrators to centrally assign managed devices to groups and to apply configuration changes or software updates, either in real time or on a scheduled basis.

ProCurve Mobility Manager 2.0 will be available January 1, 2008; pricing begins at US$1,999 for a 50-device license.
