ProCurve Networking by HP Builds Enterprise Network for World Cyber Games

Grenoble, France, Oct. 3, 2007 – ProCurve Networking by HP today completed the build-out of an enterprise-size network for the World Cyber Games (WCG) Grand Final in Seattle, Wash.

The World Cyber Games is regarded as the world’s most prestigious e-sports competition. The Grand Final runs today through Sunday, Oct. 7 at Qwest Field.

In less than 48 hours, two ProCurve networking experts constructed an enterprise-size network that will power 1,000 network devices, including 700 gaming computers, the WCG press centre, and the tournament zone and sponsor area. In addition, the ProCurve network will provide the infrastructure that will deliver real-time event coverage that will reach between 20 and 40 million people across the globe.

“The speed and skill in which ProCurve deployed this network in such a short period of time is astounding,” said Hyoung-Seok Kim, chief executive officer, International Cyber Marketing, the global organiser of the WCG. “This re-affirms the decision to partner with ProCurve Networking by HP to deliver a network infrastructure that is powerful, secure and dependable.”

The traffic requirements of gaming are similar to those of an enterprise voice-over-IP (VoIP) or video-over-IP system. The WCG network is designed to create a flexible, stable and dependable competition environment, while providing a secure wireless overlay across the entire WCG venue during the event.

“Network delays affecting gameplay during a tournament would mean that the game must be replayed, which would cause unacceptable hindrances in the overall competition,” said Ben Van Kerkwyk, global product manager and World Cyber Games network architect, ProCurve Networking by HP. “We utilised ProCurve Adaptive Networks switches including our newest core switch – the highly available 8212zl – along with additional hardware and software to simplify management and unify wired and wireless network operation.”

Earlier in 2007, ProCurve was named the official global networking infrastructure provider for the World Cyber Games. Under the three-year agreement, ProCurve will design and build the secure network environment for the annual WCG Grand Final and three Pan Regional Championship tournaments in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

ProCurve Networking by HP has partnered with World Cyber Games since 2005, when ProCurve was the official network infrastructure provider for the Asia regional championship in Singapore.
